making sense out a scentless life

So, I’ve been keeping a little secret that few know and can’t hold it anymore. I’ve been able to smell and taste EVERYTHING for two months now. This past Thanksgiving and Christmas marked the first holidays that I was able to completely smell and taste since 2007.

This is a record! I’ve been experiencing some not new but new to me smells and tastes, while also remembering those I disliked. Let’s just say, my favorite dishes as an anosmic are my not so favorite right now. My pickiness is back in full effect, along with my smell capabilities.

As soon as I walk into spaces, I feel bombarded with smells. It can seem a bit overwhelming. I find myself catching my breath at times, sometimes even holding it while pumping gas, getting my nails done, and driving past atrocious smells on the road. But most of all, I’m enjoying the good smells.

While Christmas shopping with my Mom, I had a ball at the perfume section for a good 30 minutes or longer while she was in another section. I pretty much used up all the little papers they had to spray the samplers.

How did this happen? Well, I got two cortisone shots for an unrelated issue early November. That could definitely be a factor. I have also been on my maintenance allergy shots for six months and am happily no longer having allergic reactions afterwards. Back to the shots. Since I’m always able to smell after I’m given steroids, I’m guessing I have an inflammation issue 🤷🏽‍♀️ – I’ll go further in detail in another post.

Let’s just say I’m enjoying every moment of this. Happy New Year!
