Today is Anosmia Awareness Day. Yes, there really is a day dedicated to raising awareness for Anosmia. It was started by Daniel Schein, who grew up without a sense of smell, on February 27, 2012, to raise awareness about anosmia and encourage anosmia research.
Anosmia is a serious condition that deserves more visibility. Smell centers like the Monell Center have been doing research on anosmia to find a cure and the University of Florida Center for Smell and Taste and charity Fifth Sense UK just organized a Smell and Taste Conference on UF’s campus this past weekend.
I am one of 6.3 million Americans who suffer from anosmia. To be honest, I’m not happy to be a face of anosmia, but I’m glad to share my story to raise awareness…if that makes any sense. Check out my answers to frequently asked questions about my experience here.
Living with this disorder is annoying, dangerous, and sometimes depressing, and really feels like I’m missing out on life’s moments and smells. But I thank God for waking me up this morning to see, touch, hear, and taste somewhat. 🙏🏾
Of all the five senses, the smell can be undervalued, especially until it’s gone. Can you imagine living without your sense of smell? It’s been ten years for me, minus a couple of random days every other year. Pretty unimaginable, right?
Well, I just wanted to let you know that this day exists. To learn more, check out Anosmia Awareness and even some articles written by and/or about anosmia sufferers I’ve linked to.
There’s quite a bit of us sharing our stories. And if you need to catch up on my personal story, here’s when it all started.
